Slaanesh Warriors army project (update)

Since the previous summary Slaanesh got some new toys, so before whole project is finished I decided to post one more recap. Hope this will provide any motivation for painting fantasy stuff, because painting last 2 chariots took me much too long. I think the main reason is the fact I don't play Warhammer Fantasy Battle anymore, so there's not much preassure to paint - contrary to Bolt Action stuff. 

As you can see below there're only 2 units left to paint: dragon ogres and chaos warriors. While I don't mind painting dragon ogres, I suppose I might get bored in the middle of painting the warriors, so painting army gets prolonged - it's 14-men strong horde after all...

Luckly I've managed to collect different sculpts of infantry, so whole unit should look pretty fine after done and placed on the battlefield.

Undead army wyvern #2

Undead army just got another fast attack unit.

After finishing the "serpentine" wyvern I was actually hoping for a bit more from the rider. Thought it would be bit more "epic" - it's wight lord after all. On the other hand it's just better dressed and armoured skeleton so I guess it fits the mount. To make it more coherent with the other units model got black-and-white stripes on the shield. It got spike in the middle 'cause shield to hide the pin - don't want it to fall off in the heat of the battle...

It's a big model so I tried to take some herohammer styled pics for group shots. Using large game mat was good idea but the landscale background is just too small. I think I'll just have to paint one sometimes instead just using prints.

This is where the magic happens. Looking at the picture I am quite sure I need like twice wide background for taking pics of large units or armies. The game mat I use comes from terrains4games - definitely recommend stuff they make!

Undead army wyvern #1

October was pretty fuc#ing busy month.

I had it all planned but unexpected load of work from real life pushed away whole painting I was hoping to finish. Life's a b!tch, but apparently that's nothing but yesterday news 🙄

Hoping to get on track again.

So after returning from this year's Oldhammer Weekend I decided to add some more models to the Undead army. Not that I expect to start playing Warhammer Fantasy Battle on regular basis (or playing it at all...), but working on fantasy themed stuff is just fun: 

lots of colors and lots of ideas contrary to Bolt Action armies for example.

During Oldhammer Weekend it turned out my army was pretty lousy. I sure liked all models but it was just way too slow for any attempt of offensive play. Most of armies I've seen there were led by badass general mounted or even more badass monster: dragon, manticore or such thing. I know it's Herohammer, but general on dragon is just too much for my taste.

So while digging through pile of shame graveyard I found old serpentine dragon. 

I remember I got my copy like 8-10 years ago and I really liked the model until it arrived. After I put my dirty hands on it suddenly I had no idea what to do with it. Tried to assemble and paint it but there was no painting mojo anymore so it ended up on the top of pile of shame...

...until I came back from the mentioned Oldhammer Weekend. Driven by Warhammer frenzy started looking for proper mount for wight lord. And tt was perfect: old dragon models were much smaller compared to modern dumb as fu#k placcy monstrocities so it was great candidate for winged nightmare of wyvern.

There was only problem: dragons have 4 legs but wyverns have only 2... 

But on the other hand there's no problem which cannot be solved with brutal strength and wallpaper knife. Quick surgery supported by Doctor Dremel and suddenly Undead army got frying monster to command!
To make rider fit the mount even better (and to hide all post-surgery grievious wounds...) I made simple saddle and model was ready for painting. As for color choice I used trusty color combo. The beast is part of Undead army so it got blue tones instead of green - like it's younger cousin serving the green horde.

The base is pretty busy but large bases are perfect places to dump incomplete models, spare bits and other junk from the bottom of the bitz box. Judge for yourself. 

Next stop: wight lord riding that beast and I can move to another post-apo themed piece.

War wyvern #2

Hey again,

Few weeks back I've finished bare war wyvern, and now it finally got the saddle but most important - greenskin rider. Although I am really glad I got whole piece done, painting the orc turned out pretty exhausting. 

Mean, while working on the wyvern was just ton of fun, painting it's master was a tar pit.

My guess is, the reason was the sculpt. Without any doubt it's supercool piece of middlehammer history, but all those details made the model kinda "messy". I think it would look much better without all those skulls for example - it's not Khorne's servant after all 😉

The beast was supposed to be painted oldschool style - which means vivid, candy colors. Similar tones were used on orc's flesh and details, but to give it some contrast saddle, armour and banners were painted bit darker. At first I wanted to use original banner but it was just way too much cuteness for my taste.

Besides black and white banners fit skeleton chariot and mercenary ogres - they are all mercenaries serving mighty von Carstein vampire lord or even maybe Nagash himself...

turning Valhallan-o-killa-kan-o-mortar into something more neo-soviet and post-apo... 👽

War wyvern #1

Apparently once again I got myself time travelling.

A while back I washed some oldie junk from the mysterious box I possess. It was pretty random mix of miniatures from the 90's. Sadly I've never seen any of those on the game table but always wanted to see them painted in the display case. Mid 90's was my very beginning in the  hobby, so I keep lots of heart for that sort of oldschool gems (check Carnifex or ogres if you also like such stuff).

This time my victim was Marauder's orc war wyvern and it's greenskin rider.

Orcs and goblins armybook was my first contact with Warhammer (thank you Marek for luring me into that tar pit 😉), so models from that period still make an impression on me: 

wavy paper banners, vivid colors but mostly those supercool sculpts. 

Assembling the piece was quite a challenge - it's 100% metal, heavy model, so to make sure it wouldn't fall apart during painting I gave it double pinning. Originally it came with standard size square base, but it surely deserves more! On custom made base I could give it some elevation and I got something solid to pin the leg to.
Besides I could use the last gravestones I had in the bits box. I have a secret plan to paint and use all minis and bits I have before I leave this planet (that's the reason of Sherman turret on Carnifex' base btw).

As for painting I am not sure I wanted to make it similar to the official paintjob, definitely wanted to see it bright and vivid - it's 90's model after all!

Don't really like posting unfinished stuff but the work pressed me strong enough I had to put the brushes away. The shaman has to wait - looking forward too see it sitting on the wyvern's back, casting spells on enemies of Gork and Mork!
